V.C.E. Dance
Prerequisites Students must have movement experience and or a dance background. It is advised Units 1 & 2 are completed before Units 3 & 4.
Areas of Study
- Dance Skills - Involves the practise of dance skills to develop the body for use as an instrument of expression.
- Dance Perspectives - Students develop the capacity to critically analyse and appreciate dance through movement exploration and the viewing of dance performances.
- Dance Making - Students make dances through structed improvisation by responding spontaneously and imaginatively to ideas, emotions, observations and experiences. Students create solo and group work by selecting, refining and arranging movements into unified compositions and performs learnt works by reproducing existing choreography.
Aims of the Study Each unit of V.C.E Dance is designed to enable the student to:
- Develop physical control of movement and contrasting qualities of movement;
- Develop a safe and correct use of the body in individual and co-ordinating group work;
- Develop skill associated with a variety of approaches to dance making and performance;
- Respond creatively to an idea, emotions observation or exploration of movement;
- Create a unified composition using a personal movement vocabulary;
- Observe and experience dance in an analytical, critical and reflective manner;
- Understand cultural influence on dance.
Timetable
Students choose appropriate classes from the existing timetable. Theory class times to be confirmed.
Styles of dance offered are Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary. Students must attend one ballet class to refine dance technique. All other classes can be chosen on personal preferences.
Students have access to large studio space with mirrors, video equipment, research books and videos. Students will participate in the mid year presentation evening and end of year concert.
Each unit runs for approximately 16 weeks. Students must pass 16 units to gain their V.C.E.
Boys Classes
Hawthorn Studio of Dance welcomes male dancers of all ages and standards.
Special "Boys Only" classes can be timetabled to suit for a group of three or more students in Tap, Jazz or Hip Hop. Younger students can enrol from 3 - 5 years of age in our "Jump & Jive" class on Friday afternoons at 2pm - 2.45pm and 4.45pm - 5.30pm. We also hold classes at our Summer and Winter Schools.
